How we fix errors

Report a wrong number with the report form. We check it against the source. A fix that changes a published number is logged here with the date, the old and new value for a sample, and the cause, and the page shows the old value beside the new one for at least 12 months. A published data version is never edited; a fix publishes a new version and marks the old one superseded.

We use three kinds of entry: a correction, when something was wrong and is fixed; a note of concern, when we suspect a problem and are checking, with the number still shown and flagged; and a withdrawal, when we remove something we cannot stand behind, keeping its page to explain why.
